one Debt at a time

Living with debt is hard

We know, because 5 years ago, we were exactly where you are now: struggling with our debt and hoping for it to simply go away. Between courses, family, friends and some other helpful resources, we managed to climb out of debt, and we believe you can, too, which is why we have decided to launch a brand new blog! By sharing finance tips from the millennial perspective, we hope to empower you to take control of your finances and to help you take back your life one debt at a time.

who are we?

We're Zach & Emily Moore: college sweethearts who are parents to two angels in heave and two adorable floofs (Koda & Riley), with a passion for travel, movies, and Tiny Homes.

If you asked us five years ago if we thought we'd be where we are today, we would have laughed. You see, Zach was starting his new job at UNC, and I was just starting my Private Editing Business. Together, we had a collective total of about $63,000 in debt, which included a car loan, student loan debt, and some other smaller miscellaneous loans. It felt like a huge weight was dropped on top of us, and there was no way we were going to get out from under it. But we knew if we didn’t tackle that debt, it would follow us for the rest of our lives. Since we both were determined to live our life together to the fullest, we decided that we needed to eliminate our debt as quickly as we could. So we sat down and came up with a plan.

Within the 4 years we were paying off student loans, Zach completed both a Master’s and a Specialist degree without taking out additional loans; I grew my Private Editing business to a success and thriving career that I am still growing today; we added two adorable fluffy pups to our family; and we bought our first AND second homes with a 20% down payment, all while making an average household income of $60,000-$90,000.

In October 2018, we made the very last student loan payment. Just one month after that, we made our very last payment on the car and became debt free. It was the most liberating experience of our lives.

We know that if we can do all of that and still manage to pay off our debt, you can, too (we promise!), which is why we have set out to create this blog. In our journey to become debt free, we learned a few things along the way, and we want to share our knowledge on everything from managing living expenses to retirement. We couldn't have done it without the love and support of our friends and family, and we hope we can be a support to you as you start your debt-free journey!
