Recap: Our Trip to Bald Head Island 2017

I'm Emily!

I'm a NC girl born & raised, a wife to my college sweetheart, mom to my sweet daughter Caroline & fur-mom to my floof, Riley. I love summer days at the beach, fall weekends in the mountains, & everyday in between exploring new corners of the world. I live for Italian food, tacos & margaritas. Currently taking life one adventure at a time.

Welcome to Bald Head Island!

I have to admit — I find myself struggling to write this blog post. Mostly, it’s because I don’t even know where to begin trying to describe how near and dear Bald Head Island is to my heart. My family and I have spent a week almost every year on this island for the last decade. Yep, that’s right — TEN WHOLE YEARS (wow I feel old)! The first time we went, it was just my parents + us kids. Each year we go, our family gets just a little bit bigger. We’ve made so many incredible memories over the years, I can’t even begin recounting each one to you because let’s be honest: this would be a novel. So instead, I’m going to highlight a few of my favorite things about our adventures on the island.

How to Get There

Bald Head Island a little island in the Outer Banks off of the coast of North Carolina. You can only get to it by ferry, and you can not bring cars on the island. This is because they are trying to preserve the natural environment. When you get to the ferry terminal, you have to unpack all of your luggage before parking your car and boarding the boat. When you arrive, a tram service takes you to your house. For the remainder of your stay, your main mode of transportation is a golf cart — and it’s awesome!

Where We Stay

A little fun fact about our trips to Bald Head is that we always pick a different house to stay in each year. With the family growing in size, it is really difficult to find houses that accommodate us all. Now we stay in a house that we have rented a couple of times, and it is our absolute favorite! It’s called the Carolina Cottage. There’s lots of space and beds for all of us, but the best part is the balcony. It has a huge deck with a breathtaking view of the ocean. We used to love the adventure of having to pack up the golf carts with all of our beach stuff and driving to different parts of the island, but now that babies are getting thrown into the mix, we find that it is much easier to stay in a house with a private beach access.

How We Pass the Time

During the day, you will usually find us on the beach! I mean, where else did you expect to find us on an isolated island? We set up a big tent and the day usually starts off with the ladies lounging while the guys throw the football back and forth. We are also huge fans of bocce ball and ladder golf, and hold family tournaments every year.

When we’re not playing down at the beach, you can usually find us crabbing in the creek. My family loves to see how many crabs we can catch with our individual hooks, buuuut we also drop a crab pot because they are SUPER handy. I caught quite a few this year AND I caught a pregnant crab! I wish I snapped a picture of it before we let it go because it was really interesting to see.

My Favorite Part…

If you know me, then you know what I’m about to say: my favorite part of this island is the lighthouse. Maybe I’m just weird, but I have always loved lighthouses. I love that they stand tall in the worst weather conditions; I love that they were used to guide sailors home, or guide them to safety; and I love that each one is completely unique. There’s so many things to love about lighthouses, and Old Baldy is no exception. In my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful and unique lighthouses that North Carolina has to offer!

Honestly, I could go on and on about Bald Head Island, but I’m going to save the rest of the memories for future blog posts. All that’s left to say is that it truly is our home-away-from-home, and I love the memories we make there. Seriously, if Zach didn’t have to go to work, I’d convince him to move there with me 🙂 I hope you enjoy some of these sweet memories I’ve shared with you from this year’s trip. We can’t wait to see you again in May, BHI!
